How I Work

Many homes are built with short term thinking. I take a different approach. Clear planning, careful detailing and practical decision making come first, resulting in homes that function well, use energy responsibly and adapt as life changes.

I’m Matt, a registered architect in Victoria (ARBV 17816). I work with homeowners planning renovations, extensions and new homes who want to get the fundamentals right and think beyond quick fixes.

The clients I work best with value careful design over shortcuts. They are open to exploring options, asking questions and refining ideas. They want clarity around cost and construction early, not surprises later.

My services span early feasibility and concept design through to planning approvals, documentation and construction support. The focus is on reuse where possible, passive design principles, and improving comfort and energy performance in ways that are practical to build and grounded in realistic construction costs.

As part of my onboarding process, I invite clients to donate to a youth homelessness charity in place of an initial consultation fee. It is a small way of connecting each project to something broader than the house itself.

Working Together

A new project is not just a design exercise. It requires coordination, realistic budgeting and careful sequencing.
The process below outlines how I approach that from our first call through to construction.

1.
Initial Conversation

A complimentary phone discussion to understand your property, goals and constraints.

This determines whether we are a good fit.

2.
Brief, Site Review & Fee Proposal

I review the site and planning controls, and we clarify scope, priorities and budget expectations.

Instead of charging for this stage, I invite a donation to a youth homelessness charity.

3.
Concept Design

We explore options that respond to the existing house, your lifestyle and performance goals.

This stage tests ideas properly before committing to detail.

4.
Budget Review

Once the concept is developed, we engage a quantity surveyor or builder to test construction cost.

This ensures the design aligns with realistic market conditions before progressing further.

5.
Planning and Documentation

If planning approval is required, I prepare and manage the application.

Detailed drawings are then developed for final pricing and construction.

6.
Construction Support

I can remain involved during construction to provide oversight and answer queries.

This provides continuity between design and construction, so the project is delivered with the same level of care it was conceived with.

What Clients Say

We employed Matt to reconceptualise our small, tired and leaky home. It was a full home renovation with a small extension and only the frame, most of the roof, brickwork and plaster remaining. Matt had terrific ideas for small spaces, sustainable design and function, and amazing aesthetics. We now feel like we live in a grand and luxurious home that is practical and efficient. I could not recommend Matt’s work more highly.

Matt is really great to work with. He is thorough, always thinking about the overall space holistically, and brings forward fresh ideas with clear justification and listens to what you want to do and what is truly achievable. His extra focus on risk management considerations gave me confidence throughout the process, and his views are always realistic – especially around expected costs with builders.

Matt’s ability to make valuable introductions and referrals, and to adapt his involvement – taking as much of the load or as little as you want. He is nimble in his approach, highly personable, and makes what could be a complex process feel seamless. Could not recommend him more highly!”
